The Chocolate Touch

We just finished reading the Chocolate Touch and really enjoyed it! The Chocolate Touch is a great modern take on King Midas' golden touch and has a great lesson about being selfish and how getting exactly what you want may not be the best thing in the world. From ruining his first trumpet solo to destroying his best friend's birthday party to causing significant issues with his family, the Chocolate Touch is a great read.

Captain Underpants

Abraham and I have started re-reading the first Captain Underpants book. We have read all the books in the series and after a short hiatus, we have decided to re-read them. My son loves the Captain Underpants books. He laughs out loud. The two kids in the books get into trouble, pull pranks, and turn their principal into an underwear-clad superhero. It's great fun.

The author of Captain Underpants has come out with a new series which is supposed to be the comics that the boys in the book create. My son isn't reading comics yet so we have skipped them, but maybe in a year or two we'll pick those up as well.

We are both ready for a Captain Underpants movie. Definitely.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

We recently completed reading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I was a little worried about whether or not both of my kids (Maria age 5 and Abraham age 6.75) would be able to follow it but I decided to give it a shot. It was a great hit. Maria loved all the girls in the book and especially liked Mr. Tumnus. Abraham was very interested in the White Witch and Aslan.

While reading the book we also watched the BBC version of the movie, and it was able to bring the White Witch to life for us on the pages. I would highly recommend using that movie to enrich the book if you wanted to.

After The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, we tried to read Prince Caspian but we all got bogged down by the wars and who was fighting who. It was kind of like reading the Old Testament at times, so we put it aside and vowed to read Voyage of the Dawn Treader next whenever we decide to return to Narnia.

What is Sharing Cake?

The name of our blog refers to our favorite children's author's first story entitled, "A Piece of Cake." It was purchased by a publisher for a thousand bucks. Fortunately the author, Roald Dahl, went on to write some of the greatest childrens' stories (and great adult fiction) of all time. Our title is a hats off to him and all the joy he brings us.

What This is All About

I love books. My kids love books. And we love reading books together. It's a nightly ritual that I look forward to every night. And we have been reading some really great books together, so I wanted to share our journey with you.
